WiSe 18/19: PS- Introduction to Cultural Studies II: "Actors and Acting on the Shakespearean Stage"
David Jefferson Amelang López
Comments
This seminar aims to illustrate the social and cultural environment in which the plays of Shakespeare and his contemporaries were produced. That is, in this course students will learn to better interact with early modern drama by understanding the historical situation in which they were written and first performed. We will be looking at how playwrights and actors lived and worked in Renaissance England, what the London playhouses were like, and, most importantly, how all this can change the way we read and understand the plays. Every week we will be discussing a new topic in class, always in relationship with one of the three plays we will be reading throughout the semester.
Course Reading
