In this course, we will study the history of the English language from its beginnings to the present day, focussing on language structures on all levels of linguistic analysis with a comparative perspective focussing on surrounding European languages. Students will be introduced to the most important sources of historical language data and to the main empirical research methods. The course will lead through the development of English from pre-historic times over Old English, Middle English, up to the present day. Structures and changes will be illustrated by comparison to other languages while introducing basics in contrastive linguistics and linguistic typology.
