Course description
The protection of human rights is of significant concern in modern international law. Understanding its significance involves knowing what current human rights guarantees are provided by international law and how the institutional arrangements for protecting them work. This module provides a broad but selective survey of issues in this field, critically examining the main human rights treaties and reviewing the procedures for implementing them, in the United Nations and through regional systems in Europe, Africa and Latin America. It considers the roles of state-oriented international organisations as well as non-state actors, such as non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and business actors in the human rights sphere. The module also addresses selected substantive rights in depth such as the right to life, freedom of expression, economic and social rights and freedom from discrimination on the basis of race, gender, sexuality, disability etc.
