The lectures will address the concepts of the „primitive“ and the „savage“ and discuss their relevance for discursive self-descriptions of Western civilization, their legitimizing force in the politics of settler colonialism and constructions of empire, and their artistic and literary representations and resignifications from the 16th to the 21st century.
