Kommentar

This colloquium is primarily designed for M.A. students getting ready to write a thesis and complete the same within the next semester. If you are not ready to prepare yourself for this task, you should not yet sign up for this course. The research colloquium has three purposes: first, it convenes several times and in small group sessions, M.A. thesis candidates to discuss writing and research skills as well as the progress of individual projects. Second, it offers graduate students, ABDs and postgraduates the opportunity to discuss their research and ideas related to North American history. Third, it features a diverse number of guest speakers presenting their own research, some of whom will be selected by the participants of this course. Students will meet some select speakers individually for tea 45 mins. prior to class in Rm. 216 to ask questions based on the readings and relating to their individual research interest or any topic they may be interested in. In sum, in this class we will discuss your research along with new research trends, topics, publications, and career trajectories while also welcoming outside speakers in class. All students interested in North American history and related issues are welcome! Course requirements: After each guest presentation, students are required to post one critical question on blackboard, reflecting on their individual research in the context of the presentation. In addition: active and regular participation in class (no “sit-ins”); be familiar with, and ready to discuss, required readings for class; introduction of individual guest speakers, online and in-class presentation of questions and research proposal; composition & in-class presentation of proposal (3-5 pp, plus table of contents & bibliography, due one week prior to the last session); as well as a comment on a fellow student’s proposal in writing and in class during the last session (post comments online 24 hours after the last session).
