This course is a complementary course to the lecture class of development economics. The course will consist of a series of seminars on the following topics, such as: the meaning and measurement of economic development and economic growth; what are the impediments to economic development?; what is the role of geography and institutions in economic development? Financial markets and economic development; the effects of fertility and population growth on economic development; economic openness, trade and development; poverty, income distribution and development; economic growth and environmental deterioration; etc. We take a broad view of economic development. The field is not simply confined to the study of poverty and underdevelopment, but it also examines how countries become successful in economic development. In the last decades, parts of East Asia followed by China and India, have been experiencing significant success in economic development. It is crucial that we try to understand the reasons for their success. We pay particular attention to development in China and we also examine various aspects of economic history to provide a historical perspective on development successes and failures. We also will include topics such as growth and inequality, environmental issues, etc. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate familiarity with some central themes and issues of economic development, they will have an understanding of the difference between growth and development, major growth theories, the measurement of inequality, poverty and population issues facing the world, international trade, and the importance of foreign aid. Students will also be able to analyze empirical evidence of the patterns of economic development. The course (lecture/seminar) is complemented by lectures given by another professor.
