WiSe 19/20: V-Literatures of Medieval Britain: Temporal Alterity
Wolfram Keller
Kommentar
In popular films and books set in medieval times, the latter frequently appear as barbaric and uncivilized in comparison with an enlightened modernity. When and how such views of the medieval emerged and what their manifestations entail will be the subject of this lecture. Students will be introduced to recent discussions about the problems attendant upon periodization as well as recent work concerned with the construction of temporalities. Moreover, the lecture will touch upon the representation of the medieval in the Renaissance (by way of discussing several plays by William Shakespeare) as well as constructions of various temporalities within medieval texts themselves (with a view to the medieval Troy story, the topic of the seminar offered in this module).
