Kommentar
With almost half of all Muslims living in the countries of South and Southeast Asia, the processes that have led to the development of such a large Muslim population and that are generally referred to as 'Islamization' are of great interest for the study of Islam. This seminar will introduce students to the most important theories concerning the Islamization of South and Southeast Asia societies and discuss different aspects of the growth of Muslim communities in the region, such as the role of diverse social groups, institutions, and networks in mediating the spread of Islam, questions of agency and motivation in the adoption of Muslim identities, and processes of negotiating local practices and discourses in a Muslim context. The seminar will also help students to contextualize theories of Islamization in their respective intellectual and political context and to critically engage with the assumptions and terminologies of these theories.
