WiSe 19/20: Socialist Encounters: The Second and Third World in the Global Cold War

The history of socialism and its implementation was long, turbulent, and multifaceted. It also involved shared mental and political spaces of global outreach connecting the Second and the Third World. The goal of this seminar is to explore the history of global socialism in the second half of the twentieth century through the lens of Cold War encounters. The course will examine key dimensions of state-orchestrated and grassroots global contacts with the aim of analyzing how they have impacted the formation, development, and mutation of the political, cultural and mental landscape of global socialism.
We will investigate the initiatives and efforts of actors across geographical divides during global socialism from a variety of angles, including, prominently, the history of architecture, intellectual history, the history of migration, the history of racism, and gender studies. Moreover, during the course, students will consider the ways in which diverse and novel ways of expressing collective and individual socialist belonging have gradually come to form (and contest) the core of global socialism. Students will read and work with materials such as secondary academic literature, archival material, movies, and ego-documents. We will also make a half-day excursion to a Vietnamese community center with the aim of exploring some of the – often unintended – consequences of the global Cold War.
