WiSe 19/20: Confronting Empire in Latin America in the 20th century
Thomas Lindner
Kommentar
Despite the formal sovereignty of most Latin American nation-states, empire and imperialism remained controversially discussed topics throughout the twentieth century. Latin Americans used the vocabulary of imperialism to express their status as victims of foreign intervention or to highlight their powerlessness vis-à-vis larger empires more generally. Especially the role of the United States of America as the Western hemisphere’s unrivaled hegemon was viewed with increasing suspicion. US involvement in Latin America thus sparked strong anti-imperialist responses in very different contexts and times (the Age of Imperialism, the World Wars, the Cold War). The responses to empire (in the shape of revolutions, resistance movements, or intellectual engagement) will be explored in the course with a focus on the period between 1890 and 1970. Schließen
