Grzegorz Rossolinski-Liebe

Kommentar

Subject: The world in which we live is, unfortunately, not only a world of prosperity and peace, but also violence and genocide. In the twentieth century alone, more than 100 million people were killed or died as a result of war, genocide, and other forms of mass violence. While the Holocaust is the best-known genocide, civilians were murdered in hundreds of other violent events. In this seminar, we will discuss the concept of genocide and the meaning of violence. As a first step, we will read theoretical texts about genocide, mass violence, different forms of war and the Holocaust. Second, we will study several examples of genocides in the modern and premodern periods. We will analyze the specific nature of each and compare them to find out what unites and separates them. Program: In this seminar, we will read theoretical texts about the concept of genocide and study the history of mass violence, war, and the Holocaust. Applying a global perspective, we will compare different forms of genocide and got to the bottom of the question what unites and separates them. Is this course suitable for you? This course is open to students from the Arts & Humanities, Cultural Studies, Social Sciences and Economics. In any case, you should be open to new perspectives, interested in reading texts about genocide, mass violence, war and the Holocaust and discussing the texts with other students. Workload and Assessment: In order to obtain 5 ECTS credits, you will have to attend the course regularly (at least 13 out of 15 sessions); study the weekly course materials (an average of 15-25 pages of English texts per week); give a presentation alone or in a group (10-15 min) or submit a short essay (approximately 750 to 1,000 words), and pass the written examination (90 minutes).
