Subject: Subject: Since the ‘refugee crisis’ in 2015, migration has become one of the most important topics of political debate in Europe. The seminar wants to show that the conflict has its roots not predominantly in actual cultural and political differences, but that the media and their presentation of refugees and migrants have played an important role in the process of political polarisation. Program: In order to understand the roots of the refugee crisis, we will look at migration in Germany and at the representation of migration in German media in the second half of the 20th century. We will take into account facts, figures and statistics and analyse German television programmes (in translation), paying particular attention to political framing concerning the use of language and visual images. Is this course suitable for you? The course is open to students from all academic disciplines, but you should be interested in current affairs and the relationship between politics and the media. You won’t need any particular methodological skills from media and communication studies, but you should be willing to analyse texts and visual media. Workload and Assessment: In order to obtain 5 ECTS credits, students will have to attend the course regularly (80% of the meetings)), participate in the discussion in class, hold a group presentation and pass the written examination (90 minutes).
