WiSe 19/20: Political Science in the U.S.

Political Science is a scientific discipline, a set of specific methods, theories and concepts. All major Universities in the US and other democratic countries have political science departments and in every country there is at least one professional organization or association bringing together political scientists. In the US, the American Political Science Association (APSA) was founded in 1903. APSA is organizing conferences and meetings to encourage scholarly understanding of political ideas, norms, behaviors and institutions. At the same time the association aims to inform public choices about government, governance, and public policy. In this seminar we take a closer look at the historical development of APSA and political science in general. How does the discipline define itself in relation to other academic disciplines and how does the discipline reflect to the respective political, social and economic context? Looking at a selection of Presidential Addresses, we try to find an answer to those questions and at the same time try discuss critically the role and function of political science as a scientific discipline.
