Course Description
:This course introduces students to the basic concepts and methods in the study and description of language, with modern English as the primary object of investigation. English is spoken by millions of speakers and there exist numerous varieties. The variety that has been taken as a reference is Standard British English, with the standard accent Received Pronunciation.
Students will be introduced to the different levels of linguistic analysis (phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics) and to different fields in linguistics, e.g. sociolinguistics. You will be made familiar with linguistic terminology as well as with some current methods and tools for linguistic analysis. By the end of the seminar, students should be familiar with the basic methodological tools to be able to systematically analyse language data and to relate their findings to theoretical issues.
Course Requirements: regular attendance, active participation (weekly homework, participation in class activities, quizzes) and final written examination
NOTE: The contents of the complementary lecture Survey of Language and Linguistics by Professor Anatol Stefanowitsch (Monday 2-4 p.m.) will be presumed to be familiar.
