#FridaysForFuture, #BlackLives Matter, #MeToo, #Jan25 or # JeSuisCharlie ... are a few hashtags of massive magnitude worldwide.
Social movements are praised for their democratizing potential, at other times being criticized for their anti-democratic potential. Our current oversaturated media systems combining online and offline modes of communication, fundamentally changed how social movements communicate their messages and connect to the public. Hashtags became slogans of political demands and solidarity.
Yet, social movements still use classic repertoires, as protests, and ‘old’ media as print flyers and press conferences to express their demands and achieve their goals. How does journalism interact with social movements in today’s world of interconnected publics? How do public engage with the social movements?
This course covers the theoretical foundations in the fields of social movements in hybrid media systems in various international contexts. Together students shall read central literature on the fields social movements theory, hybrid media systems and strategic & political communication.
Students learn to analyze real empirical cases of their choice, enhance their teamwork skills and independent project management competencies.
Throughout the course regular attendance and a presentation are a must. At the end of semester students submit a scientific report as a term paper of 6000 words in English language.
This course is only offered in a conjunction between the Hauptseminar (HS) 28852 and the Methodenübung (MÜ) 28862. As places are limited ERASMUS and external students are advised to contact the instructor before the first session.
