“But what if we are all fictioneers, as you call Coetzee? What if we all continually make up the stories of our lives?” asks a character in J.M. Coetzee’s Summertime. The problem of fictional reliability lies at the heart of his literary and critical writing. It features prominently as a prism through which these works reflect social and political issues. In this course we will read a selection of Coetzee’s seminal novels – Foe, Disgrace, Life and Times of Michael K – and look at lesser known works ranging from autobiographically inspired texts to literary criticism. Combining close readings with theoretical perspectives, we are interested in the ways in which his texts negotiate issues of violence, agency and the limits of the human. Regarding Coetzee’s view of “the surprising involvement of the outsider”, we explore the intricacies of identity, alterity and ethical responsibility, as well as the complex ways in which they are narrated in Coetzee’s prose.
