WiSe 19/20: Introduction to ancient history
Klaus Geus
Comments
This lecture series covers the history of Greek and Roman antiquity (ca. 8th century BC – ca. 7th century AD). It is conceived as an introduction to ancient history (in a so-called „propaedeutic“ form) and will contain not only a chronologically oriented overview of the Greek and Roman history but also a discussion of some central topics (e.g. Athenian democracy). Another focus is on the development of ancient history as an academic discipline.
Previous knowledge of the subject is not required in order to attend this course.
An accompanying reading is strongly recommended, e.g.: K. Christ: Geschichte der römischen Kaiserzeit: Von Augustus bis zu Konstantin. 4. Aufl. München 2001 (Beck´s Historische Bibliothek) (u. ö.).
There are also some useful "introductions to ancient history", most recently by Hartmut Leppin (Beck 2015, 2nd ed.). Recommended is also Eckhard Wirbelauer / Hans-Joachim Gehrke‘s „Oldenbourg History Textbook: Antiquity“ (Oldenbourg 2010, 3rd ed.).
This course is the first part of the module "Introduction to Ancient History" and will be continued in the summer semester 2020 with the introductory seminar in Ancient History. It is also open to students of other academic programs and to anyone interested in ancient history.
Working language in this course is German.
