WiSe 19/20: China’s Economic Reform and Development

Laike Yang

Comments

Since 1978 when China initiated economic reforms and opening up policies, the Chinese economy has been one of the fastest growing economies in the world. With an average annual growth rate of nearly 9% for more than 3 decades. China is now the world’s second largest economy. What China has reformed and what has not during last few decades? How does economic reform improve the efficiency and productivity? Is China’s economic reform more successful than other former socialist countries? How China’s economic and social transformation effect the other countries? Apart from the fast economic growth, China’s economic and social inequality has been increasing continuously. China is now the world’s largest energy and raw materials consumer and importer, and the world’s largest CO2 emitter. Does China’s economic growth de-coupled with the country’s development goals? Is China’s economic reform and development a good model to follow by other developing countries? This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge of what has happened to China and its impacts on global economy in the last decades. We will explain and discuss the above mentioned questions. The course offers in-depth analysis of Chinese economic reform and development. Issues like SOE reform, income disparities, trade liberalization, banking and financial deregulation, China’s economic relationship with other countries, will be covered in the class discussions. close
