WiSe 19/20: Global Settler Colonialism

Janne Lahti

Comments

Settler colonialism is a relatively new field of inquiry in which scholars have typically examined the comparative and connected enterprise of European settlement across the world. Settler colonialism refers to a distinctive form of colonialism where the settlers aim to replace the Natives/previous residents and capture terrestrial and maritime spaces with the intention of making them their own. It involves conquest, long-range migration, permanent settlement (or at least intent of such), elimination of Natives, and the reproduction of one’s own society on what used to be other people’s lands. In this course we will examine histories of the ongoing global phenomenon of settler colonialism while linking it to questions of globalization, empire, nationalism, genocide, gender, class, race, and indigeneity. We will explore a broad range of historical research from, for instance, Patrick Wolfe, Lorenzo Veracini, James Belich, Ann Laura Stoler, and Margaret Jacobs. Our geographical focus will also be broad and inclusive, including settler projects and phenomena in North America, Australia, Africa, and Europe. We will investigate both failed settler colonial projects and those that still exist, European settler colonialism as well as that initiated by the Japanese and indigenous peoples. Students will learn how settler colonialism is a specific historical phenomenon and a field of academic inquiry that has and continues to shape our modern world. They will also learn how it is an inclusive, land-centered project that involves a comprehensive range of agencies and forces with varied impacts. No specialized knowledge or familiarity with any specific region is expected to attend this course. Requirements: active class attendance, discussion of weekly readings, oral presentation, and research paper (optional). close
