WiSe 19/20: V-Lit. Stud.: Periods-Genres-Concepts: English Novels
Andreas Mahler
Comments
Though what is called the ‘rise of the novel’ arguably begins for England in the early decades of the eighteenth century, the novel as the leading genre seems to reach its incontestable peak in the course of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The lecture, which is offered in combination with the seminar on ‘Narrative Poetics’ but can of course be taken independently, will trace this development by showing how the English novel first engages in the world-making process of ‘realistically’ depicting English society (as well as of incriminating its deficiencies) and how it then begins to question more and more its world-making capacities in order to explore itself as a text-making agency that is less concerned with the world around it but rather with its own medial capacities.
