WiSe 19/20: Ü-Semantics and Pragmatics:
John Michael Tomlinson
Comments
“In this seminar, we discuss various approaches to characterizing how meaning systematically arises from language. First, we start with how words take on meaning across usage contexts and how word meanings change over time. In addition, we address if and when words and utterances have meanings independent of context (semantics) or whether such meanings always depend on the contexts, in which they are used (pragmatics). Last, we address additional sociological and psychological factors that contribute to deriving meaning from words and utterances.”
