Aims of qualification:
The students will get to know about a variety of analytical methods which reveal the composition of clastic sediments and sedimentary rocks (XRD, XRF, SEM, CT, radiography, polarization microscopy, partly detrital geochronology and thermochronology). We learn how to critically evaluate these methods and data sets with regard to their ability to test scientific hypotheses and to answer research questions. Furthermore, we learn how to choose an appropriate petrographic method for a specific problem, to critically question, quantitatively evaluate, and integrate such data sets. Moreover, we learn how to interpret the composition of sediments and sedimentary rocks as a function of exogenic and endogenic, chemical and physical processes (provenance, climate, tectonics, transport duration, transport medium, diagenesis). From mineralogical and textural information, we will learn how to reconstruct depositional environments in a spatial and temporal context.
Contents:
- Introduction to various analytical methods to analyze the composition of sediments and sedimentary rocks.
- Composition, formation and interpretation of clastic sediments and sedimentary rocks.
- In depth study of these methods, the processing and interpretation of petrographic data sets.
- Description of loose sediment, sedimentary rock samples, thin-sections and their interpretation.
