WiSe 19/20: Introduction to East Asian Art History: Material Culture

The course serves as an introduction to the subjects of study of East Asian art history. Through joint exercise of object description and discussion of selected readings, individual topics, including bronzes, Buddhist art, painting, calligraphy, ceramics, lacquer art, and architecture, will be presented and handled. The objective of the course is to provide initial insights into the pivotal genres, stylistic periods and theoretical terms of the field. The course is accompanied by a tutorial, where advanced students assist participants in utilizing and deepening the knowledge imparted in the introductory course. At the end of the semester participants finish the course by taking a written exam. Part of the two-semester introductory module, the course is followed by an introduction to methods of art history in the summer semester.
In course sessions the instructor speaks mainly in English; participants can feel free to communicate either in English or German.
