During this seminar, we take a scientific perspective on language. We will learn about the tools and the thinking process applied in empirical research. The main aims of the seminar are acquiring technical know-how in corpus linguistics and building up experience with academic literature. In the end, students will be able to design and carry out their own empirical research project. Special focus of this seminar will be the English morphology. We will explore its regularities and irregularities and chart some of the most elusive grey areas in English grammar.
Credit requirements are:
- regular and active participation in discussions
- weekly reading assignments and/or research homework
- student presentation
- an academic paper of c2000 words
