Comments

This course deals with today’s Korea – the Korean peninsula – from the perspective of the Cold War or with an understanding of the Cold War and its effect on the present. The lecture is divided into three sections: concept definition and conceptualization of the Cold War, environment political opportunities and measures between the two Koreas, and research and policy consulting regarding North Korea issues. In the course’s first part serves to developing a precise understanding of the Cold War and its global, regional (particular East Asia, Europe), and local (particular Korea) characteristics. Through intensively scrutinizing socio-scientific theoretical as well as historical observations of discourses and artefacts of the Cold War on the Korean peninsula the students will acquire a wide and detailed knowledge as well as a critical understanding of the state of the art. In the second part of the course draws on the concepts and understandings of the preceding part, and deals with opportunities, projects, and measures regarding environment policy beyond the two Koreas’ borders. In each semester there is focus on a particular topic (ex. wadden sea conservation) that serves as concrete and topical as well as realpolitical case study, which students utilize for applying their conceptual knowledge by approaching and studying the subject with a certain research question. In the course’s third part a second case study topic related to think-tank research and policy consulting (ex. North Korea) is addressed. In this way, the students can learn yet another facet of how the Cold War wields influence on the present Korean peninsula and far beyond. In the end of the course, which is conducted by way of teamteaching, there are two final sessions in which the contents addresses over the semester are being summarized, and the students introduced to approaches to their semester papers. close
