WiSe 19/20: China’s transition and food system

This course takes a look at China’s post-Mao transition through the lens of its food system. Students will gain an understanding of different aspects of the country’s food system, from its historical context since early agricultural modernization efforts in the Republican era to contemporary topics such as digitalization and climate change. Over the course of the semester, core concepts such as food security, food safety, and resource governance will be introduced and discussed. Students will become familiar with rural and urban stakeholders from production to consumption and their relationship to each other. Required readings on food will facilitated discussion on China’s political, social, cultural and environmental changes and continuities, and thereby revisits China’s transition from a different perspective. All materials will be in English. Class will be held in German and English. close
