WiSe 19/20: Social Class in the 21st Century
Maria Keil
Comments
Social class is dead. Long live social class!
The seminar discusses the role of social class in the 21st century and whether it is dead or alive as concept for social structure analysis. We will look at classic definitions of social class as well as current class analyses of European societies. In doing so we will examine how modern postindustrial society can be captured with social class theories and what we can gain from alternate concepts of stratification. We will also have a look at the intersection of social class and other dimensions of social inequality such as gender and ethnicity. Eventually, we will ask what forms of discrimination based on social class, known as classism, we can find in social everyday life and discuss the linkage of the diversity discourse and social class. close
