The seminar aims to discuss Kants manner of contemplation on religion, revelation and the question of God and thereby enquires its contemporary relevance. The consistently problematic relation between reason and belief, which is pointedly met in Kants radical restraint on the human cognition, indeed constitutes one of the best touchstones of the philosophy and study of religion. Why is there an undeniable need for God present in every human being, and how can this need be brought to accordance with the equally undeniable limits of the speculative reason? How can mankind be “condemned” to metaphysics without possessing adequate theoretical means to meet this “fate”? Does (Christian) revelation play a significant role and if so, in what way? As will become apparent, the question between the poles of reason and belief concerning the European Enlightenment does not evolve around individual sensitivities or certain social influences but rather remains a matter of politics. It refers to the understanding of society, constitutional state and secularization itself, namely at a time when reflection on political change and protection of human and civil rights was as prevalent as rarely before. Whoever writes about religion within the bounds of reason at the end of the 18th century engages in nothing else than social theory from a political standpoint that cannot be overlooked. The question on human freedom and his responsibility thereby remains crucial. close
