WiSe 19/20: Rituals. Cultural Theories and Material History of Religious Practices
Antonio Lucci
Comments
Rituals have attracted particular attention from scholars both in religious and cultural studies: rituals of giving and accepting gifts, sacrificial rituals, libations, etc. are nowadays extensively investigated in the context of religious practices. The course analyzes both the material as well as the theoretical aspects of rituals. Following a first thematic introduction to the concept of ritual, we will explore places, media, and practices that transform a series of human actions into a ritual. In particular, works of authors as René Girard, Arnold Van Gennep, Karl Meuli, Alexandre Kojève, Giorgio Agamben, and Émile Durkheim will be taken into consideration and analyzed in detail.
