WiSe 19/20: Global Philosophy

Henning Hahn

Comments

We live in a globalized world; but the philosophy we study mostly reflects a parochial (European or Anglo-American) tradition. Important philosophical views fall out of the curriculum because they require special expertise in African or Chinese cultures. In this context, the idea of a truly global philosophy has come to the fore (Thom Brooks). Global philosophy should not be confused with intercultural or transcultural philosophy. While the latter aims to bring our thinking into dialogue with other traditions, global philosophy is about overcoming these differences by developing a common pool of concepts, methods and discourses. Global philosophy is fed by shared experiences and problems, problems that must be solved creatively by testing and combining all available approaches. In the seminar, we will get to know and discuss the main arguments for global philosophy. We will then go into examples in the field of practical and political philosophy and ask how global problems (migration, inequality, climate change, poverty) could be addressed in the spirit of global philosophy, that is by considering non-European views (Ubuntu/Confucianism). The seminar will be mainly held in English, though perfect fluency is not required. A text reader will be provided at the beginning of the course. close
