In 2017, the Australian Prime Minister criticised a diversity awareness program called ‘Safe Schools’ by referring to its designers as ‘gender whisperers’, suggesting that their true agenda was to brainwash and seduce children into becoming gay or transgender. Around the world, the issue of transgender recognition has become a significant site for public disputes over biology, gender equality, morality and child-rearing. At the same time, a resurgence of feminist sentiment has prompted movements like #metoo and increased awareness of the gender pay gap and sexual violence. Is this all just a ‘culture war’? What is gender anyway and how does it structure public discourse? What does it mean when conservatives criticise ‘gender ideology’? Why do women still suffer from sexual violence? And are men to blame? This course offers an introduction to the field of Sexuality and Gender Studies and its core concepts. During the semester we will explore public debates, feminist theory and critical thinking about gender, sexual difference, and the origins of sexual inequality and gender roles. close
