WiSe 19/20: PS-Surveying English Literatures: Modern Antiquities
Wolfram Keller
Comments
Several recent popular book series as well as TV shows testify to a growing interest in premodern cultures. In this seminar, we shall read different British and Canadian literary works that are set in Greek or Roman antiquity as well as Britain’s remote, premodern past. The focus of the seminar will be on the ways in which contemporary books—like Bernardine Evaristo’s The Emperor’s Babe (2001), Margaret Atwood’s Penelopiad (2005), Pat Barker’s The Silence of the Girls (2018), or Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Buried Giant (2016)—represent and construct various antiquities, and how the latter speaks to present ideological and aesthetic concerns. close
