WiSe 19/20: Epistemology of Emotion
Jan Slaby
Comments
This course will examine emotions from the perspective of theories of knowledge. It will introduce to both, the philosophy of emotions and recent work in social, situated, pragmatist and feminist epistemology.
The course has two parts:
In part 1 we introduce and discuss the main theoretical questions about the epistemic status of emotions, i.e., What does it mean for emotions to be rational?, What is emotional intentionality?, How do our reflections on emotions shape our self-awareness and self-understanding?, What is the epistemic value of emotive bodily gestures and affective bodily feelings?.
In part 2, we examine the role of emotions in epistemic communities using the tools of the situated, enactive, pragmatist, and feminist approaches to knowledge, challenging the traditional individualism of mainstream epistemology. Then, we focus on the epistemic practices of knowledge-production for assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the theoretical models in facing the social and political issues related to the ethics of knowledge.
