WiSe 19/20: Island of Memories: Culture and Society in Contemporary Taiwan

This introductory seminar aims to offer an in-depth overview of culture development and social change in contemporary Taiwan from historical and comparative perspectives. The course consists of three major sections: 1. Topical lectures: synopsis of representative scholarship of Taiwan studies on the island’s history, politics, economy, society and culture. 2. Issue-oriented discussions: group exchanges and debates based on current affairs and ongoing controversies in Taiwan and East Asia. 3. “Experiencing Taiwan” sessions: specially designed learning activities to help students get familiarized with and reflect on things Taiwanese. For prospective students: No language and history background are required. Active participation is highly encouraged. close
