WiSe 19/20: Gender, Power and Technologies in an International Perspective

This course provides an introduction to key concepts in the field of gender and (information and communication) technology studies, drawing on intersectional approaches, but also on political communication theory exploring questions of power and interactivity in digital media environments. Starting from the idea of the “social construction of technology”, the course examines the reciprocal constitutions of relations of power and technologies and provides introductory readings to analyze how “racism and sexism are part of the architecture and language of technology” (Safiya Noble, 2017).
In light of recent feminist mobilizations in a globalized and digitalized world, the course enables students to critically investigate possible renegotiations of gender and the subjects of feminisms while engaging with patterns of economic and political exploitations inscribed into new global information economies.
