This course invites students to the interdisciplinary understanding of gender and sexuality in modern East Asia, focusing on Japan, South Korea, and China. Modernity (or, modernities) in this region is featured by catching up “Western modernity,” compressed modernization and rapid economic development. We will explore the way in which this specific modern experience influence and constitute the institution, perception, and practice of gender and sexuality in East Asia. Based on the reading materials required to read in advance, students are expected to be engaged in critical and creative discussions along with provocative questions in each class in English. close
