IMPORTANT: Hebrew or Arabic language skills are helpful but are NOT a prerequisite for participation. If you have questions in this regard, please don’t hesitate to contact the instructor. This course marks the beginning of a series of seminars dedicated to Jewish texts in Arabic and their Hebrew translations. Whenever possible, the seminars reflect current research. This semester we read the Metaphysical Treatise (Maqala ilahiyya) by the 13th-century Jewish philosopher Moses Halevi (Musa b., Yusuf al-Lawi al-Išbili). The relatively short text discusses cosmological questions. In particular, Halevi uses the philosophy of Avicenna (Ibn Sina) to argue against Averroes (Ibn Rušd), who wants to identify the first principle, i. God, with the immobile mover of the Spheres. Halevi’s treatise was read by representatives of both Jewish philosophy and Kabbalah. We will be reading the text in its Arabic original, in the medieval Hebrew translation, as well as in French and English translations. close
