WiSe 20/21: PS-Historical Linguistics: Before Modern English: Language in Late Medieval England
Stefan Thim
Kommentar
In this class we will look at the English language on its way to becoming Modern (Standard) English and at the intra- and extralinguistic characteristics and developments taking place in the late Middle English period. This will include a discussion of long-term structural changes in the language, but also a closer scrutiny of cultural and sociolinguistic factors that helped shape the language in the centuries after the Norman Conquest. We will also read a number of Middle English texts, including a selection from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, but also other specimens of the language from various genres. Schließen
