This reading-intense seminar will provide an introduction to racial inequality and white privilege in the United States. In the first part of the seminar, we will read and discuss sociological insights into racial inequalities in the United States, in particular systemic and symbolic racism and their consequences. In the second part of the seminar, we will read and discuss research on white privilege, in particular on the concept of white fragility. In the third part of the seminar, students will tackle a topic of their choice related to racial inequality. They will work on it in small groups over the course of several weeks and present their findings in class. The goal is for students to gain insights into social driving dynamics of racial inequality and white privilege in the US and beyond and develop skills to study such topics and critically reflect on them. Due to the seminar’s focus on exchange among and discussions between students, most sessions will take place as live Webex sessions. If the situation allows, the group presentations at the end of the semester will take place in person. Schließen
