WiSe 20/21: Different populisms? Discussing a challenging term

The seminar deals with the topic of populism and current populist actors and parties. By highlighting the different aspects of the term and the multitude of understandings, one of the goals of the seminar is to find a working definition of populism and to utilize it to analyze different cases. While acknowledging that there are various schools of thought on this, a major focus will be on how one can empirically grasp populism and which possibilities for operationalization exist. Building on this first conceptual bloc, in the second unit, theoretical attempts to explain why populist actors are gaining more and more supporters will be the focus of the sessions. Those competing assumptions will then be used to analyze some empirical examples from, mainly, the member states of the EU. It will not only be asked what explains populism but also if and how, for example, populist behaviour changes when taking over an executive position. In the last bloc/sessions, some overall broader themes will be on the seminars agenda. It will, for example, be looked at the question if widely perceived populist parties have a specific foreign policy strategy and what this means for the current international sphere. Some preliminary thoughts on how the coronavirus pandemic changes the current political and populist settings will also be discussed. Schließen
