WiSe 20/21: (HS) Judaism and Conversion: Legal aspects and historical dimension

The course examines a very important but also very delicate subject. The conversion to and from Judaism has accompanied Jewish identity for millennia. How have the boundaries of belonging been defined over time? Who has crossed them, and under what circumstances? From the proselytes of late antiquity, to the forced conversions during the Middle Ages and the Early modern age, up to the baptisms for conviction or convenience of the Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries, literary sources, legal texts, artistic testimonies will be investigated.
