WiSe 20/21: (HS) Rabbinic midrash in the 8th century Tafsir on the Quran of Muqatil

The course aims at comparing the biblical exegetical traditions embedded in rabbinic literature (3rd-8th centuries Palestine and Babylonia) and the Tafsir of Muqatil ibn Sulayman (8th century Baghdad). Early Muslims willingly incorporated Biblical and post-Biblical narratives in their exegetical works on the Qur'an. These narratives were later labelled in a pejorative way isra?iliyyat, because of their suspect Jewish origins. To explore the intertextual relations between Jewish-rabbinic traditions and Muslim exegetical narratives, a selection of biblical narratives from the earliest preserved Muslim exegeses, Tafsir of Muqatil, will be compared to rabbinic midrash from the same era.
