WiSe 20/21: We have never been Muslim: Religious Education and Islamic Popular Culture in the Middle East and beyond

This seminar chooses a cultural studies approach to the modern and contemporary history of the Middle East and beyond. It addresses the transformation of Islamic cultures of knowledge and religious education. The seminar examines religiously grounded cultures of knowledge and the translocal and transregional networks of transmitting such knowledge in modern, institutionalized state-run education systems, in private schools and Madrassas. But educational institutions and state-sanctioned narratives in disciplines like history, civics or religious education form only one component among several that shape complex and multi-layered processes of identity formation among students. Hence, the seminar also draws attention to the informal dissemination of Islamic religious knowledge through various forms of contemporary popular culture. It covers various competing efforts to transmit norms, beliefs and practices considered Islamic, including pious lifestyles and cultural practices related to consumption habits, fashion styles, musical tastes. Islamic education in this broader sense is addressed in this seminar as a site of struggle over the meaning of Islam, in which religious traditions are not only being reproduced and conveyed, but renegotiated as well.
