WiSe 20/21: Gender Equality in International Institutions

The United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women in 1995 has set the standards for gender equality policies and strategies moving forward. Since then, international and regional organizations have worked to promote gender equality at all levels of governance. As more and more organizations applied gender equality strategies, critics began to question the effectiveness and inclusiveness of these strategies. This course serves as an introduction to gender equality strategies from an intersectional perspective. We begin by exploring the history of gender equality in international and regional organizations, and progress to the type of strategies that have been adopted by these institutions. We will discuss the criticisms addressed by intersectional theorists, and begin to identify some of the weaknesses within specific strategies. Throughout this course, students will learn to identify different approaches to gender equality, analyze the strengths and weaknesses of different strategies, and apply an intersectional lens to gender equality strategies adopted by international organizations. At the end of the course, students will be able to apply their knowledge to concrete examples from different organizations. Schließen
