WiSe 20/21: Family policy in comparative perspective

Family policy has changed considerably since the 1990s across Europe, and developed into a central field of state intervention. Although many countries expanded their family policies and increasingly included measures aiming to support gender equality in work and care arrangements, country differences in generosity and design of family policies remain strong. Family policy has not developed linearly in all countries, nor were the underpinning normative and economic aims always coherent. In the research placement, the focus will be, first, on prominent theories for explaining country variation, change and outcomes of family policy. Second, the comparative perspective will be discussed as an approach to study family policy. Students will develop their own comparative research questions for examining cross-national patterns and changes in family policies or their outcomes. Participants in the research placement can choose between a quantitative design with multiple countries and a qualitative comparative case-study design based on analyses of policy documents.
