Multilateral organisations have recently faced growing challenges. Member states are leaving international organisations, governments are cutting their financial support or blocking the replacement of members, and non-state actors are also organising protests and campaigns against these institutions. In this seminar we will look at recent research on the legitimacy and legitimacy crises of international organisations in three steps. First, we will examine the foundations and principles of legitimacy beyond the nation-state and get an idea of the empirical state of research on different organizations. In a second step, based on contributions from research on the politicisation of regional and global governance structures, we will look into the causes of the growing importance of legitimacy issues.
