This seminar provides students with an insight into key aspects of political transformation processes, reflecting upon case studies in Asia in transregional perspective (Europe, the Americas). In part one, key readings will provide knowledge into key aspects and dimensions of sociopolitical transformation processes such as social movements and civil society activisms as change agents, interventions, forms of political participation, the role of (social) media as well as autocratic cycles of regression/repression. Part 2 of this MA seminar will focus on central sociocultural, politico-economic dimensions and implications of the Covid 19 pandemic with regard to democratic as well as autocratic governmentality configurations in transregional perspective. Apart from reading introductory theoretical texts on governmentality in times of global pandemics (not only) in transition contexts, the focus lies on the empirical analysis of case studies such as Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Great Britain or Brazil. Diverse contexts of political transformations and systemic qualities will be reflected upon in interactive group work formats along with input lectures in digital teaching mode (among others via Zoom and Padlet, documentary videos as well as offline-elements such as audio podcasts and reflection / discussion spaces via Moodle-Etherpad). Students will be trained in key readings and aspects of transition studies along with acquiring a scientifically sound, critical perspective on current developments of social, political and economic aspects of the Covid 19 pandemic and its subsequent implications in terms of governmentality. close
