Comments
This seminar will provide and introduction to qualitative sociological research. We will discuss readings on different techniques of data collection and analysis (interviews, participant observation, video analysis) and on key aspects of research design (research questions, case selection, concepts). In the second part of the seminar, students will apply the input from the first half of the seminar and collect and analyze their own data in individual research projects of their choice, which they will present and discuss in class. During sessions students will exchange their experiences with using specific types of research questions, data, and cases. The goal is for students to develop a research design, gain ideas of how to translate specific theories into empirical analysis, and learn the basics of how to conduct qualitative sociological research with creativity and rigor. Due to the practical course content and focus on exchange among students in what worked and what did not in their own analyses, most sessions will take place as live webex sessions. close
