The Methods Seminar aims to introduce the participants to the logic of modern research designs, i.e. to the structure and design of empirical studies in the social sciences. Experimental and quasi-experimental designs will be discussed as well as longitudinal, cross-sectional and multi-level designs and comparative (multiple) case studies. The advantages of the simultaneous application of standardised and non-standardised methods and the consideration of different approaches (triangulation) will also be highlighted.
We will use exemplary studies from sociology, social psychology, economics or political science to illustrate and learn from the different approaches. In addition to the discussion of scientific quality criteria, the question will always be in the foreground as to how convincingly the theoretical initial assumptions have been translated into concrete investigative steps and which (causal) conclusions are possible on the basis of the respective design.
In the end, participants should be able to identify typical research designs, evaluate them and use them for their own research questions. To this end, all participants should develop exemplary research designs and present them in poster form.
