WiSe 20/21: Social Interactions, Routines, and Rituals

This reading-intense seminar will provide an introduction to sociological research on interactions, routines and rituals. The first part of the seminar will discuss the basics of micro-sociology, both theoretically and empirically with a focus on the classics such as Goffman, Garfinkel, Blumer, and Collins, as well as empirical studies that apply these theories for instance to the analysis of audience behavior, rap battles, or crime. The second part will introduce opportunities and challenges entailed in the analysis of interactions, routines, and rituals in the form of recently available video data, such as mobile phone recordings, CCTV recordings, or body cameras. In a third part of the seminar, students will form small groups in which they will conduct an analysis of interactions, routines, and rituals using such video data. They will present and discuss their analyses in class. The goal is for students to learn how a focus on social interactions, routines, and rituals can contribute to a more fundamental understanding of society and to develop first ideas how to analyze these elements. close
